Acupuncture and music sessions which help drug users beat their dependency have been given a boost by generous Birmingham workers.
Employees at Pertemps People Development Group (PPDG) have donated £400 to national charity Phoenix Futures towards the sessions staged at its centre at Newhall Hill, Hockley, Birmingham.
(Front row, left to right) Kathy Chim, Trisha Lane, Noel Reid, Tanya McGougan and Janet Bright, of Phoenix Futures, are joined by colleagues and representatives of PPDG which has donated £400 to the charity.
Tanya McGougan, Outreach Team Manager at Phoenix Futures, said the donation was the latest link between the two organisations which have been working together to improve the lives of local people.
“Half of the money will be put towards the cost of training one of our team in auricular acupuncture, which has been proven to help calm people down and deal with their cravings. The other half will support our music suite. It will pay for a music tutor who will help the service users to find new interests which supports recovery from drug use,” added Tanya.
PPDG and Phoenix Futures have been working together for 10 months and already dozens of people with substance misuse issues have benefited from the services and support provided by the charity. PPDG refers long-term unemployed clients who have drug or alcohol addictions to the charity as one of the first steps towards getting back into the workplace.
Phoenix Futures provides specialist treatment services for drug and alcohol users. It facilitates and supports people’s recovery and continued progress in tackling and overcoming drug and alcohol dependency problems. The team in Birmingham works in partnership with the Drug Action Team and the Drug Intervention Programme.
Generous workers at PPDG, based in Birmingham and Solihull, selected the charity to receive the donation from its Give As You Earn (GAYE) scheme. PPDG’s PR manager Phil Pemble said that the company was delighted to make a payroll donation as part of its active community support programme.
PPDG workers contribute each month to a GAYE scheme and have donated more than £30,000 to around 150 good causes and charities, supporting the disabled and disadvantaged, in the last 12 months alone. Over 66% of PPDG’s 650 employees have signed up to the GAYE scheme, which deducts money from the member’s salary.
