Jobseekers

Cricket Without Boundaries is a unique and exciting partnership between Pertemps Employment Alliance and Warwickshire County Cricket Club, combining expert motivational training with high quality cricket coaching.

Staged at Warwickshire’s £2.6million state-of-the-art indoor cricket centre, the course is a 10-day event specifically designed for people disadvantaged in the job market through long-term unemployment, gender, ability, age, social or ethnic background.

Initially de-motivated, sport is the vehicle used to enhance participants’ realisation of their own qualities, restoring confidence and self-esteem that can evaporate when out of work for a considerable length of time.

Morning sessions are geared towards recognising and understanding ability and the idea that we all possess limitless potential. Participants use the time to get to know others on the course, talk to a professional health and fitness adviser, use free Internet access to job search and develop the skills needed to either start or return to work.

The course is highly visual and interactive, and is accessible to a wide range of learning abilities.

In the afternoon, quality cricket coaching sessions, often attended by county and international players, develop the principals of the personal development programme, re-activating the body and mind.

As a team sport, cricket requires the individual to engage with colleagues, encouraging communication and leadership skills so that everyone can learn and improve whatever their level of sporting ability. It also provides healthy exercise, a proven means of boosting confidence and energy levels, resulting in an improved quality of life.

This course has had a profound effect on those who have attended, resulting in a number of people with enhanced citizenship skills and the motivation to aid the regeneration of their communities by teaching the game of cricket.

Typically, clients report an increase in confidence, a more positive self-image, improved communication skills and a change in attitude towards employment.

Most impressive of all, Cricket Without Boundaries boasts a 40% success rate into employment.

Cricket Without Boundaries 50+.

For some people, retirement is the end of their working life and the beginning of a more relaxed lifestyle, however, there is an ever-growing number for whom later years are full of purpose and energy.

We can harness this zest to the mutual benefit of mature job seekers and those looking to employ. We identified that although 50+ were a target age group in the government’s Welfare to Work strategy, no specific course was available to meet their needs. Cricket Without Boundaries 50+ has the potential to change this situation.

As with Cricket Without Boundaries, the course offers an extensive personal development programme and a series of high-quality cricket sessions, yet all activities are tailored to suit the needs of the 50+client group.

In addition to job search activities, all clients are offered one-to-one advice explaining the potential benefits of the New Deal 50+ programme.

Detailed health assessments establish the physical well-being and fitness capabilities of clients, whilst qualified staff offer on-going advice on fitness and diet.

As all clients are of a similar physical condition, fitness activities are not embarrassing and cricket sessions are easily modified.

By devising a course that focuses on a particular age group, participants also engage more easily with one another, sharing their experiences and difficulties in the job market.

The nature of the environment clients learn in and the level of support they are given have clearly broadened horizons.

The course has been endorsed by a partnership incorporating the Third Age Employment Network (TAEN), consultants to Government on older work issues, the CBI and Saga 105.7fm, with the intention of informing government policy on older worker employment strategies.
